The VRA X-frame car transporter was developed to a customers request, specifying individual loading platforms for the upper and lower car. It meant that the cars could be preloaded on these platforms and remain untouched throughout the entire transport.
With common car transporters (the A-frame type), just the upper car rests on a platform and the whole structure is built up in the warehouse just prior to flight, to be dismantled asap after landing again.
The intention of these car transporters would be to operate them from door-to-door, rather than just airport-to-airport with a minimum of handling in between. Where handling was needed, it should be possible to handle the car by leaving them on their individual platforms and not to enter - or touch - the car.
The construction has two platforms, a highly robust structure and a very minimum of loose parts.
remarks
The VRA car transporter requires positioning on either a PRA (16 ft) or GPA (20 ft) pallet.
A smaller version which could be transported by PMC/PMH pallet (10ft) is available as well and referred to as VMA car transporter.
